Hungarian Tart Recipe

This recipe has been used by my mum, my family and I for years. I found this one day, as I was randomly looking through my mums recipe books, as a child, and I loved baking with her ever since I can remember, and nagged her to make this (I helped) – I have loved this recipe/tart ever since. It’s not overly sweet, has good texture with the jam in between, the buttery base and the slight crunch from the grated dough on top. A few squares of this with a hot cup of coffee/tea, is pure heaven to me. Take a look at how quick and easy this is to make:

Ingredients:

125g butter

2Tbl vegetable oil

1 egg

2 tsp baking powder

2 Tbl castor sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

2 C flour

enough jam/jelly for spreading ( depends on your taste)

Method:

preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius.

Cream butter & sugar together. Add oil and vanilla essence. Beat together. Stir in the egg. Add flour and baking powder. Mix together. Knead into a soft dough. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions.

press down 1 portion of the dough into greased baking tray. Even out with your fingers until dough is evenly distributed and relatively smooth. Prick with fork. Spread jam (I use 2-3Tbl) evenly over the base/dough. Take the other 1/2 portion of dough and grate the dough evenly over the jam until the grated dough covers the top.

Bake @ 180 degrees celcius. For 20-30mins till lightly browned. Remove from oven and dust icing sugar over tart while still hot/warm.
